Project Engineer – Civil

 OVERVIEW/JOB SUMMARY:

 Work with the Project Manager to develop primarily non-routine and complex design and analysis concepts with regard to the engineering of civil infrastructure, including paving, drainage, grading, water, and sanitary sewer (incumbent may focus on all areas or just one or two areas of expertise); may oversee the entire design process as a technical expert and also may oversee and review the technical work of other engineers; and assists the Project Manager in some aspects of managing large projects

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

  • Assess the requirements of a prospective project, determine project tasks, and work with Project Manager to determine scope of work, budget, and staffing requirements
  • Assist the Project Manager / Senior Project Manager with resource planning and forecasting
  • Analyze / design paving, grading, drainage, water and sanitary sewer infrastructure for various projects, subject to review and approval of the Project Manager
  • Has primary responsibility for quality control of design, subject to review and approval of the Project Manager
  • Oversee and review the design work of engineers and technicians on the design team, including calculations
  • Complete design calculations and verifies for  conformance with codes and manuals, and client expectations; also coordinates with review agencies during review/approval
  • Check progress of work of design team and communicate with Project manager of any change in scope or additional services
  • Coordinate all aspects of project/design document completion within company and other design professionals, but with the assistance and review of the Project Manager
  • Prepare draft cost opinions and may periodically report on construction activities, and pay estimates; also reviews shop drawings and submittals for compliance with design
  • Utilize AutoCAD Civil 3D and/or Microstation software or other various software applications as design and analysis tools
  • Responsible for project schedules and timely completion of production portions of projects
  • Prepare and modify reports, specifications, plans, construction documents, studies, permits, and designs for various projects; assume the signing authority for those work products
  • Visit project sites occasionally to review general progress of construction and responds to request for site visits concerning elements of the design for which the firm is responsible
  • Attend and participate in client meetings, as appropriate and as needed
  • Make technical presentations as needed
  • Mentor and instruct project engineers and/or CADD production staff as needed
  • Maintain workload projections
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (P.E.) in the state of Texas
  • Eight to twelve years of civil design or analysis experience in basic to complex infrastructure, including paving, drainage, grading, water, and sanitary sewer

TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • In-depth knowledge of civil engineering processes
  • In-depth document design skills, including decision-making skills, calculations and other project related design tasks
  • Proficient with AutoCAD Civil 3D and/or Microstation software or any applicable software designed for specific area of expertise
  • Proficient with MS Office and MS Project
  • Proficient with cost estimates associated with technical tasks and understanding of basic project financial data
  • Proficient in managing multiple assignments
  • Effective communication and problem-solving skills

  • Must be able to sit for extended periods of time
  • Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery
  • Exposure to extreme weather and various terrain during occasional site visits
