Sr. Project Engineer – Water Resources

OVERVIEW/JOB SUMMARY:

Work with the Project Manager to develop primarily non-routine and complex design and analysis concepts with regard to the engineering of civil infrastructure, primarily in specialty area of hydrology and hydraulics; may oversee the entire design process as a technical expert and also may oversee and review the technical work of other engineers; and assists the Project Manager in some aspects of managing large projects.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

  • Assess the requirements of a prospective project, determine project tasks, and work with Project Manager to determine scope of work, budget, and staffing requirements
  • Assist the Project Manager / Senior Project Manager with resource planning and forecasting
  • Perform primarily complex hydrologic and hydraulic analyses for storm drain systems and open channel drainageways
  • Working knowledge of ArcMap GIS software
  • Prior experience with 2D flow simulation software; such as Infoworks or HEC-RAS 2D programs
  • Has primary responsibility for quality control of design, subject to review and approval of the Project Manager
  • Oversee and review the design work of engineers and technicians on the design team, including calculations
  • Complete design calculations and verifies for conformance with codes and manuals, and client expectations; also coordinates with review agencies during review/approval
  • Check progress of work of design team and communicate with Project manager of any change in scope or additional services
  • Coordinate all aspects of project/design document completion within company and other design professionals, but with the assistance and review of the Project Manager
  • Prepare draft cost opinions and may periodically report on construction activities, and pay estimates; also reviews shop drawings and submittals for compliance with design
  • Utilize AutoCAD Civil 3D software and other various software applications as design and analysis tools
  • Responsible for project schedules and timely completion of production portions of projects
  • Prepare and modify reports, specifications, plans, construction documents, studies, permits, and designs for various projects; assume the signing authority for those work products
  • Visit project sites occasionally to review general progress of construction and responds to request for site visits concerning elements of the design for which the firm is responsible
  • Attend and participate in client meetings, as appropriate and as needed
  • Make technical presentations as needed
  • Mentor and instruct project engineers and/or CADD production staff as needed
  • Maintain workload projections for themself and others on the design team

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (P.E.) in the state of Texas
  • Eight years civil design or analysis experience in basic to complex infrastructure, primarily in the specialty area of hydrology and hydraulics
  • Prior experience with FEMA Letter of Map Change requests, as well as other requirements associated with floodplain management

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS

  • In-depth knowledge of civil engineering processes, specifically in hydrology and hydraulics
  • Ability to develop design concepts for simple to complex hydrologic and hydraulic assignments
  • In-depth knowledge of and proficiency with HEC-HMS and HEC-RAS software
  • In-depth knowledge of and skills with AutoCAD Civil 3D software and any applicable software designed for specific area of expertise
  • Leadership (including training and mentoring) of less experienced engineers and technical staff
  • In-depth knowledge of and proficiency with MS Office and MS Project
  • Knowledge and ability to estimate costs associated with technical tasks and understanding of basic project financial data
  • In-depth document design skills, including decision-making skills, calculations and other project related design tasks
  • Knowledge of latest design tools available in area of expertise
  • Manage multiple assignments successfully through effective multi-tasking and prioritizing
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Effective problem solving skills
  • Ability to work with a team or independently as needed
  • Ability to make effective formal verbal and written presentations
  • Ability to lead and teach less experienced engineers as well as designers and technicians
